Below are photos of gyms across Texas waiting for me to find their stories. I call them "Lay Ups".
A view of the old Agua Dulce gym from the cheap seats.
The Brenham gym is another WPA project. I've always thought it looked like a medieval castle.
Brookesmith is a hidden gem gym, another incredible WPA project. It's a few miles south of Brownwood and is one of the most beautiful gyms in the state.
The Carlisle gym is unique because it is a wooden structure.
Built in 1923, this stone building might be the oldest gym in Texas.
The sadly deserted Crossroads gym. In the 10+ years I've been visiting this old gym, it is more deteriorated each time.
Another WPA project and one of my faves, the long-since deserted Duffau gym.
The classic Eola gym. Although Eola and Millersview are some 20 miles apart, the buildings are both WPA projects and share identical architectural plans. The gym at Eola has found a second life as the home of the Farm Ale Brewing Company.
The beautifully maintained interior of the Flatonia gym.
This corner in the old Gladewater gym is where Elvis was learning his craft.
A stage was often part of the gym since it served many functions as the heart of the school. The interior of the Gordon gym looks like a hunting lodge.
The home of the Granger Lions.
The view from the bleachers to watch the Gruver Greyhounds.
The Hobbs gym is unique because it is made of adobe.
Not much is known about the Indian Creek school, but they did leave the remnants of what had to be an amazing gym.
When the folks in Junction celebrated the grand opening of their beautiful gym, then-senator Lyndon Johnson drove over from Austin to give a speech -- a quite lengthy speech.
Masterson had a beautiful tin gym.
The school at Mosheim is still just beautiful.
The gym at Nevada is still just beautiful.
