Lay Ups - Part 2

Below are photos of gyms across Texas waiting for me to find their stories. I call them "Lay Ups".

Nixon-Smiley

A really cool old gym in Nixon can be seen from the highway, right beside the football stadium.

    Pettus

The wonderful Ray Gym at Pettus High School is a WPA gym built with Tuleta Rock, a hard caliche mined from the pits around the Pettus area.

      Premont

The old gym in Premont is still being used almost nightly by the community.

        Pringle-Morse

A terrible fire in Pringle leveled the school and the heat melted the steel gym rafters.

          San Augustine

The beautifully maintained exterior of the San Augustine gym.

            San Saba

The front entrance to the San Saba gym.

              Schulenburg

Turner Hall in Schulenburg, built in 1886, may be the oldest Tx gym.

                Scranton

Built in 1929, the old Scranton gym is almost gone.

                  Shamrock

The Shamrock gym is snug against the right field foul pole of the baseball field.

                    Slidell

The home of the Slidell Greyhounds is another beautiful WPA project.

                      Spring Creek

This 3rd building for the Spring Creek school was built in 1938, and is in Skellytown, Texas.

                        Techucana

I love this wooden gym in Techucana. It was built in 1929 with lumber donated from Mexia.

                          Toyah

The sad remains of  the Toyah gym, where tons of pigeon droppings have accumulated over decades of neglect.

More Works Progress Administration (WPA) Gyms

The auditorium entrance is the front to the Bonham WPA building and the gym entrance is the back.
